Oulipost 8 — Beautiful Inlaw (Belle Absente): Untie, Intone

untie intone

outgoing union,

untie, gone

PROMPT:

Select a name from one of your newspaper articles, famous or not. Compose a poem using only words that can be made from the letters in that person’s name. For example, if you selected “John Travolta,” you may only use words that can be made from the letters A, J, H, L, N, O, R, T and V.

The use of web-based tools is highly encouraged to help uncover different words that can be made from your letters of choice. One tool you might consider is the Scrabble Word Finder.

NOTES:  The name I chose was Zeituni Onyango, an aunt of President Obama who just died. I used the scrabble word finder to get started. I wanted to write something simple today, after all the long sentences and elaborate nonsense of the last few days. I like the way this one came together to sound a note of farewell.

  1. You’re doing some really fine work here, Elizabeth. I agree that the simple words work beautifully – the image of tying and untying is suggestive of so many complexities related to life and death.
