Oulipost 11–Univocalism : Neglect

Speeches: We’re free.
Speeches: Vets served. Vets led.  Vets were key.
Speeches: Respect. Regrets. Vets need.

Neglect:  The street where vets sleep.

Multiple stories, ads and headlines in the Arizona Republic, including:

Editorial Board, ‘Rage at VA Health Care Failures Isn’t Enough’, The Arizona Republic, 4/11/20114, p. A18
Pitzl, Mary Jo, ‘Team: Kids from Ignored Files All Checked’, The Arizona Republic, 10 April 2014, p. A5
Ruiz, Celeste, ‘Family Killed in Crash Remembered’, The Arizona Republic, 11 April 2014, p. A8
Sanchez, Yvonne Wingett, ‘Vets Home Funded despite Issues at Other Facilities’, The Arizona Republic, 11 April 2014, pp. A1, A10
Moon Valley Nurseries ad, The Arizona Republic, 11 April 2014, p. A13

Univocalism:  A univocalic text is one written with a single vowel. It is consequently a lipogram in all the other vowels. If he had been univocally minded, Hamlet might have exclaimed, “Be? Never be? Perplexed quest: seek the secret!” All words used must be sourced from your newspaper.

I spent my day sitting at a yard sale table, underlining E words in blue hilighter and composing in my head. No cut and paste today.  Then I came inside where it is cool and lovely, typed up my poem, and spent a ridiculous amount of time figure out which article each word came from. The issue in the paper today was not homeless vets, but the truly shocking abuses being revealed about VA health care. With the constraint, it’s hard to get at the details, but the image worked for me as a snapshot of the system.
